Camping Gear For Your RV And Campers

Let me introduce us. My name is Scott and my wife’s name is Amie, better known as TheRoadRoamers. We’re not just enthusiasts; we’ve made the rolling hills and open highways our home, living full-time in our RV for three years now. Our journey has served as a practical laboratory for determining the best camping gear for life on the road, both inside and outside of our travel trailer and now our trusty 5th wheel RV. That is why we wanted to create this website – to help people through the many facets of owning and using their RV, whether it’s just on weekends, short or extended trips, or full time like us. From tents, to pop-up campers to Class A motor homes you will find something here for everyone. This is the first of many blog posts that will be written on this website with you, the RVer, in mind. From time to time I will be adding more posts with RV Gear we have either used personally or comes highly recommended by the many fellow RVers we have met along the way in this amazing RV community. Please note that I will be adding links to those recommended items very soon. (Depending upon when you read this, those links may already be available.)

  • You’re going to find out about essential gear that can make or break your RV experience. The items we’ll discuss are a blend of TheRoadRoamers‘ tested preferences and industry staples, aiming to improve safety, enhance convenience, and provide comfort—no matter where you’re parked.
  • This isn’t just about compiling a checklist; it’s also about understanding the reasons behind each choice. From space-saving storage solutions to life-saving safety equipment, we’ll explore how to equip your RV for both everyday living and the unexpected twists of the road.

Innovative Storage and Safety Solutions for Your RV

Here’s a little transparency: Our website contains affiliate links. This means if you click and make a purchase, we may receive a small commission. Don’t worry, there’s no extra cost to you. It’s a simple way you can support our mission to bring you quality RV related content.

  • If you want to maximize your living space in an RV, you’re going to need to think about smart storage solutions. Since Amie and I have been living the RV dream for years, we’ve got a knack for knowing exactly what works. In an RV, every inch counts, so choosing space-saving storage options isn’t just clever—it’s essential.
  • But let’s not forget safety—that’s non-negotiable. Safety gear such as tire pressure warning systems, weather radios, and extra fire extinguishers and fire blankets are not to be overlooked. A good tire pressure warning system like the “TST 507” tire pressure monitor has come in especially handy for us. It gives us that peace of mind, knowing that we’re alerted to any potential issues before they become major problems on the road. A blown tire can cause catastrophic damage under your RV and knowing immediately when you need to pull off the road is crucial in minimizing that damage.
  • And when it comes to fire extinguishers and fire blankets, you can always rely on Amazon or Walmart to find one that suits your needs. It’s not the most exciting purchase, but you’ll be thankful it’s there if you ever need it. Choose something that works for you in terms of size and usability, and make sure it’s accessible in an emergency.
  • On the topic of emergencies, proper planning can greatly reduce the risk of one. Regular checks on your safety equipment should be part of your routine. It’s not just about having the tools; it’s also about ensuring they’re in working order when you need them the most.
  • Now, while the above might cover safety inside and outside the RV, what about the goodies that make RV living enjoyable? Well, that’s going to include everything from organizers that keep your essentials at arm’s reach to modular furniture that can be tucked away when not in use. The underlying rule? Opt for multipurpose items that earn their keep within your rolling home!

Enhancing RV Kitchens and Bathrooms: Lightweight Supplies and Organizational Gadgets

In Amie’s opinion, the heart of a home-on-wheels lies in how you set up your kitchen and bathroom. And when living fulltime in an RV, like we do, every ounce counts. That’s why opting for lightweight supplies is crucial. It’s not just about reducing fuel consumption; it’s also about the handling ease and safe weight limits of your RV over the road, and, storage efficiency. Note: You will need to know what your rigs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is in order to stay within those limits. There is a tag usually located at the left front side of your RV with the GVWR on it. So, the CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity) is the difference between the GVWR and the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight). Be sure to include what ever propane and liquid you have on board (fresh water, grey water and black waste water) and subtract that from the CCC so that you will know how much other stuff you can load into your rig. One US liquid gallon is roughly 8.34 pounds. Also Note: You may want to only keep small amounts of fresh water on board and be sure to dump your grey and black tanks before you leave the campground. In some cases, however, this may not be possible to do, so, leave yourself some room in your CCC calculations to provide for any extra liquid you may NEED to drive down the road with. Amie weighed EVERYTHING before it made it into our 5th Wheel, and you may want to do the same.

  • Now what about organization? That’s where the right gadgets come in. Drawer dividers, collapsible containers, and hanging racks are just the beginning. You’re going to find out about the top picks from seasoned RVers that transform cramped spaces into user-friendly havens.
  • If you want to pick up these supplies, remember to choose something that resonates with you in terms of design and functionality. Places like Amazon, Walmart and Target are treasure troves for RV-friendly kitchen and bath items. You’ll not only save on cash; you’ll also find gadgets that are designed for small spaces, which is exactly what you need.
  • You can always adjust your approach down the road, but initially, aim for versatility and multipurpose use. A collapsible dish rack or a wired spice holder, for example, could do wonders for saving space and keeping your essentials within reach.
  • Don’t worry too much about going overboard with initial purchases. Your first attempt doesn’t need to be your last. As you live, roam, and cook, you’ll fine-tune your needs and spaces and make it feel like home.

Maintaining Your RV: Plumbing, Power, and Tire Care Essentials

I’m going to tell you about some critical aspects of RV care that can make or break your travel experience. Solid maintenance routines for plumbing, power systems, and tires ensure that your trip is as hiccup-free as possible, and today you’re going to find out about the essentials in these areas.

  • First up, let’s talk plumbing. You need a reliable drinking water hose. It’s not just any hose; it’s one designed for safe drinking water. Then there’s the equally important task of keeping your RV’s black tank in tip-top shape. For that, you’ll need a separate water hose dedicated only to black tank flushing, to keep unpleasant odors and clogs at bay. Note: Do NOT mix up the two LOL! You will also need a sturdy collapsible sewer hose to empty your grey and black tanks. The “Camco Rhino EXTREME” is one of our favorites. You should also have some supports like the “Camco Rhino Nesting RV Sewer Hose Support Kit” to lay it out on, and not just on the ground.
  • Now, onto the power supply. An RV without power is like a night sky without stars – not as bright or functional. You’ll want heavy-duty power cables and secure connections that can withstand the elements and provide continuous electricity to your home on wheels. We have one 30-Amp and one 50-Amp cable. A really good Surge Guard like the 50A Surge Guard by Southwire protector for both your 30-Amp and 50-Amp setups right where the power comes off the campground pedestal is very important. Tip: When you first arrive at your site, plug the surge protector in to make sure the pedestal is wired correctly. Most surge protectors will let you know whether or not it is. Regular checks and maintenance of these power lifelines are critical for a smooth ride.
  • And, don’t forget about tire care. Your RV’s tires are, quite literally, what keeps you rolling, so keeping them in good condition is a must. Make sure to keep up with routine pressure checks and maintenance, so you won’t have to worry too much about blowouts or flat tires in the middle of your adventure. The most important thing is DO NOT overload your camper. Like I said before, know what your cargo carrying capacity (CCC) is. Tires do not like to be overloaded and, not to scare anyone from doing this, but, a blow out could be horrible way to end your trip and in some cases prove to be deadly. Please be safe out there!
  • When selecting maintenance essentials – whether it be a trusted brand or a highly recommended product, pick what works for your needs. With companies like Amazon, Walmart and Target you’re going to find a wide range of quality options that fit your specific RV model and personal preferences and, in most cases, save you money.
  • If you want to delve into the nitty-gritty of maintaining the exterior of your RV, that’s coming up in future blog post. I was in the Auto Body business for over 27 years and know a thing or two about exterior surface care, maintenance and repairs. We’ll discuss how to keep your RV stable when parked and how to set up a relaxing outdoor atmosphere with the right furniture – because after taking care of the internals, it’s time to focus on the externals.

Conclusion: Embracing the Freedom of RV Travel with Confidence

As you now know, choosing the right gear for your RV adventure can make all the difference in how much you enjoy the journey and your destinations. Amie and I, with years of full-time RV living, will show you that each piece of equipment, from practical storage solutions to outdoor furniture, plays a crucial role in crafting the perfect home on wheels.

  • Safety is paramount on the road, and investing in quality tools like tire pressure warning systems and reliable fire extinguishers is not just smart, it’s essential. The comfort of your travels isn’t just about the destinations you explore, but also about the convenience and functionality of your living space.
  • Whether it’s organizing your kitchen with space-saving items from Walmart and Target or ensuring your RV’s stability with products like the Lippert JT Strongarms, the right choices can turn a good trip into a great one! And with retailers like Amazon and eBay offering nearly everything you might need, equipping your RV is easier than ever.
  • I really hope that you equip your RV with these insights in mind, remembering that your first attempt doesn’t need to be your last. You can always adjust your approach down the road, enhancing your setup based on what fits with your unique travel style.

So, whether you’re a seasoned Road Roamer or a newbie to the world of RVing, embrace the freedom that this lifestyle offers. Set out on your next adventure with confidence, knowing you’re well-prepared for whatever comes your way, indoors and out. Adventure awaits, and your well-equipped RV is the key to unlocking it all! 1. Scott and Amie (The RoadRoamers),

After living on the road for 3 years, I knew you two would have some fantastic ideas for equipment and storage!

I sure never thought to consider the weight of all my items when packing my RV. I would have packed all my things in without even thinking of the consequences of it.

I am not sure that I am as ready for the RV life as I feel that I am. There are a lot of considerations and being a single female, I could get into some hairy situations or expensive ones.

Is there a particular RV brand that you would suggest for a single lady on a bit of a budget?

I will keep this article handy for when I decide to make that first trip. I want to be as prepared as possible.

    1. Hi Stacie!Thank you for reading the article and reaching out. There are definitely a lot of things to consider when recommending a particular RV such as tow vehicle and payload of that vehicle as well as how much cargo carrying capacity your RV needs so you can live comfortably.  Also, what your “camping” style would be help determines the possible type of RV that is best, if you need more solar for long periods of boondocking, or whether partial or full hook-ups are always necessary needs to be considered. What is your “all-in” budget (meaning cost of RV, tow vehicle if you need to buy, membership costs – such as Thousand Trails and/or Passport America – and all necessary accessories)?  What will your monthly budget be to live?  Hint… it probably won’t be less than living in a sticks and bricks, to be completely honest. One huge item to consider when recommending (and even purchasing) a particular RV is there are definitely some manufacturers that have better customer service than others and that needs to be considered. We can definitely give you some advice based upon our experience as well as the experiences of many we have met while on the road!  Feel free to reach out with a list of questions and we will be happy to answer them the best we can.  We will have a lot of information forthcoming so please continue to watch for new and informative blog posts. Best Regards Scott

  7. Hey Scott and Amie! It’s awesome to see how passionate you are about RV living—your journey is really inspiring. I can totally relate to the importance of smart storage solutions; when I went on my first road trip, I learned the hard way how vital it is to maximize every inch of space. I remember squeezing my entire camping gear into the smallest compartments of my travel trailer, only to realize later that I forgot my cooking essentials. Hahahahah! Now, I always make sure to have a designated storage plan that includes collapsible containers and organizers. It’s such a game changer when you can easily access what you need without tearing apart your RV!

And I couldn’t agree more about the safety aspect. Having reliable safety gear like a tire pressure monitoring system has saved me from some potentially dangerous situations. I once had a tire issue while parked, and it was a huge relief to get an alert before hitting the road. It made me realize that prevention is key. Plus, I love how you highlighted the need for routine checks on safety equipment. It’s one of those things that can easily slip our minds but is so important. What are some of your go-to safety gear recommendations for new RVers?

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your own experiences. It’s awesome to hear that you’ve also found the value in smart storage and safety solutions on the road!  We can definitely relate to the challenges of fitting everything in while still being able to find it later (we’ve been there with the missing essentials too—haha!). Collapsible containers and organizers really do make life on the road so much easier!

When it comes to safety gear, we couldn’t agree more about the importance of a tire pressure monitoring system. We Highly recommend the TST 507 TPMS for new RVers. It’s such a game changer because it not only helps you stay aware of your tire pressure and temperature in real time, but it also gives you peace of mind by alerting you to potential issues before they become dangerous, just like what happened to you.  We believe it’s one of the top investments for RV safety, especially for those just starting their journey.

Thanks again for reaching out. Keep up the great work with your RV adventures, and we’re always here if you need more tips or recommendations. Safe travels and be sure to follow our YouTube channel The Road Roamers

      Best Regards
